John's Journey Back to Learning
When John came to Cambridge Acorn Project, he had been out of education for more than 18 months.
Despite experiencing a range of physical and emotional challenges that made mainstream education difficult to access, he had been left without the support he needed. His family were facing a frustrating and uncertain situation, and John was missing out on opportunities to learn, grow and enjoy childhood.
We began by standing alongside the whole family. Through our Community Wellbeing Hub, John's mum accessed support and guidance to help navigate the Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) process. We also contributed to the application, helping to ensure John's needs were properly understood and recognised.
At the same time, John became one of the first young people to access our Alternative Therapeutic Education provision. Building a trusted relationship with his therapeutic tutor was an important first step. Although he had struggled to engage with education for a long time, he quickly began attending sessions, enjoying learning again and developing confidence in his abilities.
Over time, John completed AQA Unit Awards across a range of subjects and rediscovered a sense of achievement in learning. What once felt overwhelming began to feel possible.
Today, John has successfully returned to formal education and now has an EHCP in place. His mum proudly shares that he is tackling complex equations and fractions and has even started thinking about GCSEs.
Just 18 months earlier, that future felt out of reach.
John's story is a powerful reminder of what can happen when children receive the right support, at the right time, from people who take the time to understand the whole picture of their lives. By building trusted relationships and working alongside families for the long term, we help create the conditions where children can heal, grow and flourish.
